Beginner's Computer Courses

Background:
John was originally from Waterloo, Iowa where he went to grade and high school.  Spent two years in the army and then graduated from Northern Iowa University in 1960.  His experience with computers started at that time as a computer programmer with the Micro Switch Division of Honeywell.  In 1969, the Computer Division of Honeywell offered him some computer assignment overseas.  His wife, three children and he were off to Scotland for two years.  When they returned, they moved here to the Boston area. Added one more daughter to the family and where he continued to work for the Honeywell Computer Division (later sold to the French Bull Company). He retired from this company in 1999.  Started working with personal computers in the late 1980’s and have continued his learning process on the PC’s to this day, so he says.  He began teaching the computer classes for the Senior Center in 2005.

Course Description:
This course teaches the basic tools of the computer, word processing, the Internet and E-Mail.  How to organize and save documents, pictures and music on the computer is taught and even more important, how to find them again after they have been saved.  Seniors learn how to move files and make copies for modifications and backups.  The introduction to word processing teaches the tools available to write, edit and format documents, letters and E-Mails.  The Internet sessions introduce surfing the web to find sites of interest and many useful aids.   In the E-mail classes, the participants are set up with an E-mail addresses and taught how to send and receive E-mails.  The techniques to send, receive and save attachments (documents and pictures) are also taught in these sessions.

Course Description:
This course will stay somewhat flexable based on the interests of the class and software available on the classroom PCs.  In general, it is intended for people who want to do more with their computers at home. Following is a list of topics to be covered in the course based on interests and as time permits.  They are not necessarily in the order in which thewy will be presented.

MicroSoft Media Player - Using the player to find and listen to special radio programs, CD’s, etc.
Customizing The Computer - Exploring the tools available to best fit your computer to your preferences.
MS Outlook - Using this tool to keep to-do lists, appointments and reminders of special dates.
Holiday Cards - Making and printing holiday, birthday and special invitation cards.
Address Book - Maintaining, printing an address book and labels.
Digital Photography - Taking, saving, editing and sending digital pictures
On-Line Auctions - Researching the value of items, buying and selling in on-line auctions.
Instant Messaging - Visiting on-line in a real time mode with friends and relatives.
Music CD’s Loading CD’s into your computer, selecting favorite songs and making CD’s of favorite songs, etc.
On-Line Banking - Process, benefits and risks of on-line banking.
On-Line Photo Albums - Setting up and loading pictures into on-line photo albums for sharing with friends and relatives.
MySpace and YouTube - New social networking tools available for conversing with long lost friends or others with common interests.
PodCasts – Download, collect and listen to favorite old and new music, books, radio shows, etc.
Internet Use - Finding and exploring places of interest.
E-Mail - Maintaining an address book, sending and receiving attachments, etc.
Word Processing - Customizing, using tables, inserting pictures, etc.
Writing Data CD’s and Flash Drives - for backups and taking pictures and information on trips or just to another computer.
