Intermediate Level Computer Course

Instructor: George Champine

George is assisted in teaching the course by volunteer Andrew Olson, a junior at Hudson High School.

Background:  George grew up in Fairmont Minnesota, a small farm town of 5000 in the middle of the prairie. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Master’s degree in physics in 1958 and went to work for Univac developing the world’s first airborne computer and the world’s first digital missile guidance system. He rose through the ranks and became head of Research for Univac. He obtained his Ph.D from the University of Minnesota in computer systems in 1975.&nbs p; From there he went on to work for Digital Equipment, Compaq, and HP always in engineering, research, and advanced development. He developed the company’s first computer workstation, first high resolution graphics display, first product with a mouse, and first product with a high speed fiber optic communications link.
He was Associate Director of Project Athena at MIT, which has become the acknowledged standard of excellence in distributed campus computing. He taught physics at Hamline University, and Computer Graphics at the University of Texas, MIT, and University of Massachusetts/Lowell. He has written about 30 papers published nationally and has authored three books in the computer field. He retired from HP in 2002. His hobbies include computers, photography, genealogy, antique cameras, astrophysics, and jogging.
The next training course for the Intermediate Computer Training Course will begin on Tuesday, September 16 at the Hudson High School 69 Brigham Street in room T110.  All classes are held 2:30 to 4:00 PM.  The instructor is Dr. George Champine.  If you can use e-mail you are probably qualified for this course

The intermediate course has been expanded with several new sessions.  The new sessions are: 1) taking and editing home videos, 2) computers and genealogy, 3) an expanded presentation of digital photography, and 4) the computer as an entertainment center.

A CD with a number of high-quality, tested, and free software packages is handed out at the beginning of each course.  A 100-page set of notes of all of the lectures is also available.  Problems being experienced by class members are discussed and answered during each class as a learning experience.  The schedule is:

Sept. 16        o Internet access, dialup, DSL, modems, cable access, (who are the best vendors), e-mail, anti-virus, firewalls, adware, and spyware

Sept. 23        o Digital photography: cameras, vendors, taking better pictures, composition, photo organizing, and printing

Sept. 30        o Digital photography continued: re-touching, scanning, posting on the web, digital scrapbooking

Oct. 7              o Document preparation using Microsoft Word

Oct. 14         o Genealogy using Computers

Oct. 21 o Using your computer as a media center for music, CD replacements, iTUNES and iPOD usage, podcasts, sources of free books, audio books, music, MIDI, internet radio, internet TV, and free internet telephone.

Oct. 28 o Break (no class)

Nov. 4          o Spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel

Nov. 11 o Taking and editing home video movies, and creating DVDs

Nov. 18 o Understanding the Web
o Finding important and interesting information on the web
                    o Maintaining your computer in good health

Class size is limited to 22 students on a first-come-first-served basis.  The cost of the course is $25.00 payable to the Hudson Senior Center.    You can register by contacting Marie at the Hudson Senior Center, phone 978-568-9638, or by sending e-mail to george.champine@computer.org
