From Walgreens Pharmacy: Cold or Flu: Which Is It?
Cough chills, aches, and fever. Sounds like the flu, or is it really just a cold? How can you tell the difference and when should you seek treatment from a health care provider? This time of year, many people are suffering from viral infections such as colds and the flu. If you're one of them, it's important to know the difference in symptoms and to seek medical evaluation if your symptoms are not improving. Cold and flu symptoms can be similar, but not all require medical treatment. Here are the main differences to look out for: Cold symptoms tend to develop slowly over a few days and include a stuffy nose, sneezing, slight fever and cough. Most colds do not require medical treatment and will improve on their own. Plenty of fluids and rest are often the best treatment.
On the other hand, the flu typically comes on fast, sometimes in just a couple of hours. An easy way to determine if you have the Flu is to remember the word FACTS: if you have Fever, Aches, Chills, Tenderness and Sudden Symptoms, then you probably have the flu and should seek medical evaluation. Your health care provider can help determine the appropriate course of treatment for you and determine if an antiviral medication is appropriate. And remember, the single most important way to protect you and your family from contracting the flu this year is to get a flu shot. Visit your local Walgreens Pharmacy for more info.
