Town of Hudson
Department of Veterans Services
To the Veteran Community of Hudson:
This year has marked a change in policy regarding flag placement on Veterans cemetery graves. In the past, flags have been placed upon the graves of Hudson’s Veterans twice per year-Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This policy was instituted as a show of respect to honor the deceased Veterans of Hudson.
During the September 29, 2009 Hudson Veterans Council meeting, this policy was re-addressed and discussed. The Veterans Director of Hudson explained that proper protocol is to place flags “Flags In” on Memorial Day. They shall not be allowed to remain if torn, faded, or beyond a specific time period as determined by common sense interpretation of circumstances.
Massachusetts General Law c.115 s9 “requires municipalities with cemeteries containing the remains of deceased veterans to place on their graves a flag of the United States on every Memorial Day”.
As a result of this policy review, a change is instituted by the Veterans Director to properly honor our veterans and pay proper respect to the American Flag that is consistent with flag protocol and national standards of our national symbol.
New flags will be placed on Hudson Veterans’ graves annually prior to Memorial Day. These memorial flags will remain on the graves through Veterans Day and then be removed prior to the inclement and harsh New England winter weather, which damages the flags beyond respectability. The old flags will be disposed of in a dignified manner consistent with the US Flag Code.
