Coffee with our own Police Chief Burks
Please join us for our second Coffee with Chief Burks on Tuesday July 17th at 10am at the Hudson Senior Center.  Please call the center to sign up for this.   We would like to thank Chief Burks for coming to our center in May and informing us of a new innovative program called Restorative Justice.  Restorative Justice offers a personal, community-based alternative to the often impersonal effects of crime and its punishment.  According to an article in PeaceBuilder Magazine of the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding,  “Restorative Justice is recognized as a model in the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Model Programs Guide. A 2007 University of Wisconsin study found that Barron County’s restorative justice program [in northwestern Wisconsin] led to significant declines in youth violence, arrests, crime, and recidivism. Five years after the program began, violent juvenile offenses decreased almost 49 percent. Overall juvenile arrest rates decreased almost 45 percent. Significantly, the study further found that collaboration of law enforcement officials with the community and schools was a decisive factor in reducing youth violence”. Chief Burks and his department is now offering this innovative program in Hudson on a case by case basis that meets certain criteria. Additionally Chief Burks shared a short video called “Finding Courage” which depicted Restorative Justice in a possible real life scenario.
