Setting Tax Rate

Each year, usually in early December, the Board of Selectmen are responsible for setting the tax rates for the fiscal year beginning the previous July 1 and going to the following June 30.

In order to assist the Board of Selectmen with setting the tax rates, the Board of Assessors provide Assessed values for all real property in the town based on the previous January 1.

Hudson uses "Classification", or a split tax rate, whereby some of the tax burden is shifted as allowed by Massachusetts law from the Residential Class to the Commercial classes. The amount of this "burden shift" is determined by the Board of Selectmen. (The total tax burden of course is set by the registered voters of the town when they vote to spend money at the annual Town Meeting, held in May of each year).
